Round 13 saw the Saints take on competition front runners Sydney University in a do or die affair at Hurstville Oval. With the Saints sitting in 9th position, 3 out of the top 6, they desperately needed a win to stay in touch with the pack with only 3 rounds to play.
With Day 1 washed out, 120 overs were on offer and with the addition of Kurtis Patterson and a win over Sydney Uni in the One Day Semi Final a fortnight earlier the boys were ready to take the early advantage. That they did with Sydney Uni batting first. Once again opening bowler Peter Francis claimed early wickets to put the Saints on the front foot. No one in the Sydney Uni line up got going and things got worse with the introduction of spinners Moors, Engelbrecht and Graham who combined to claim 6 of the 10 wickets. Sydney Uni out in the 44th over for 153.
Captain Nick Stapleton said "It was a brilliant combined bowling performance complimented by constant pressure from our fielders."
As expected from the top ranked team, Sydney Uni never let the Saints comfortably take the game despite a determined 54 from the skipper, Stapleton at the top of the order. He combined with NSW batsman Kurtis Patterson (25 off 22 balls) for a handy 41 run partnership. At one stage with just a handful of runs to get it looked like the Saints would come away with a bonus point win but instead lost crucial wickets before finally putting the game to rest and claiming the important win.
The two clubs compete for an annual trophy known as the O'Sullivan O'Keeffe trophy named in honour of the Sydney Uni and St George cricket legends Michael O'Sullivan and Kerry O'Keeffe. The two famous clubs have now shared the trophy 4 times apiece in its 8 year history as the trophy was presented by Club President Kevin Greene to Stapleton.
St George are now in 7th position just 1 point behind Eastern Suburbs and will take on 5th placed Northern Districts in another do or die clash at Mark Taylor Oval in Waitara.
